Christopher Robin Review

Christopher Robin has a great premise, and a worthy message. However the implemenation re-imagines the characters somewhat compared to past Disney films in both a physical sense, and in terms of their personalities. Winnie the Pooh for example went "full retard" (a Tropic Thunder reference that might sound offensive if you're not familiar). The movie also despicts the stuffed animals "alive" in a manner akin to the toys in Toy Story, rather than imagined interactions between a child and his toys. A movie has a purpose. Something to impart to the viewer. Christopher Robin is a reminder that work is towards something in your life, not the something in your life. It's easy to lose your way when you forget what's important to you. Re-imaging the characters, and making them "real" doesn't improve the film's ability to impart this message. It's actually a bit distracting, and could be a turn off for fans of Disney's other Pooh films. The movie is decent enough if you look at it as a stand alone work, but I believe it could have been a great movie if it had stayed true to the characters and the concept that their interactions are imaginary. I hope someday they remake the movie. Ideally Ewin Mgreggor would reprise his role, as he is a perfect adult Christopher Robin. In the mean time, this movie is worth a watch, but don't expect the characters you grew up with. They're still playing in the Hundred Ace Woods from your childhood.
