Movile Cave

Movile Cave is a cave in Romania which, was sealed off from the outside world for approximately 5.5 million years. The cave was discovered in 1986, and contains several species, 33 previously unknown. Most of the creatures living in the cave are creepycrawlies such as leeches, spiders, centipedes, and waterscorpions. There are also shrimps, and snails. Many of the species have no eyes, or skin pigmentation as a result of evolving in a place without sunlight. The air inside the cave is a toxic mixture of gases consisting primarily of carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulphide. The air only has 10% oxygen levels. The cave also contains a sulphidic lake. A frothy foam, comprised of bacteria, on the water surface is the key food source. The acidic water erodes the limestone cave walls releasing carbon dioxide, and the bacteria use chemosynthesis to eat the carbon dioxide.
